Recognizing the connection between education and health and well-being, California’s hospitals have developed innovative community-based programs and activities that support early childhood education and development, language and literacy, high school graduation and enrollment in higher education.

 

 

EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION & DEVELOPMENT/LANGUAGE & LITERACY

Napa Valley Parent University: Engaging hard-to-reach families and supporting parents to prepare their children for kindergarten at Napa County Schools.

 

Pregnancy Education and Classes: Promoting newborn and pregnancy health for low-income women in Orange County.

 

HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION/ENROLLMENT IN HIGHER EDUCATION 

Community Health & Adolescent Mentoring Program for Success (CHAMPS): Introducing underrepresented, minority high school students in Oakland to the health professions and equipping them with the skills to succeed.

 

COPE Health Scholars Program: Providing educational opportunities in Southern California to individuals interested in making a difference in health care.

 

Health Sciences High and Middle College Collaboration: Providing a health care-focused high school education in San Diego, as well as opportunities to earn community college credits, degrees or vocational certificates.

 

High School Outreach Program: Offering a basic understanding of stem cell research to Los Angeles area high school students.

 

Medical Academy: Opening the world of health care to San Diego high school students through lectures, skills clinics, hands-on activities, group projects, career panels and interactive discussions.

 

Science & Health Education Partnership: Promoting partnership between scientists and educators for high-quality K-12 science education for San Francisco students.

 

Summer Student Research Program (CHORI): Offering basic and clinical research training opportunities to Oakland high school students who are from disadvantaged backgrounds, racial and ethnic minorities, and others who are underrepresented.

 

HEALTH PROFESSIONS EDUCATION

Deloras Jones Scholarships: Recognizing academic excellence among nursing students and promoting a nursing workforce that reflects the diversity of California communities.

 

Youth Career Days: Exposing underserved youth in the Bay Area who are interested in pursuing a health care career to diverse opportunities through realistic, interactive scenarios and simulations.
