CMS Selects 6 California Organizations for Pioneer ACO Initiative
32 health care organizations selected nationwide

Out of 32 health care organizations selected nationwide to participate in the Pioneer Accountable Care Organization (ACO) initiative, six are located in California.

These entities have demonstrated to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) that they have made progress toward or are already functioning as ACOs and will serve as a guide for groups that plan to apply for the Medicare Shared Savings Program next year. Pioneer ACOs are designed to reward early adopters of coordinated care models to foster collaboration among primary care physicians, hospitals and other health care professionals to improve care for Medicare patients. ACOs will test the effectiveness of innovative payment and care coordination models that aim to improve quality, reduce costs and coordinate services with private payers. For a list of the Pioneer ACOs, see attached CMS fact sheet.
