AHA Report – ‘Workforce 2015: Strategy Trumps Shortage’

The American Hospital Association (AHA) recently released a report titled, “Workforce 2015: Strategy Trumps Shortage.” This report is the result of a year-long effort by the 2009 Long-Range Policy Committee to examine health workforce issues in the coming decade and to provide findings and recommendations for the field.

The CHA Workforce Committee has reviewed this report in its entirety and believes it can serve as a valuable tool for human resource directors, workforce planners, and other hospital leaders in California. The report is consistent with the CHA Healthcare Workforce Coalition message that although the current state of California’s economy has caused many health care professionals to postpone retirement or increase work hours, easing workforce shortages in the short-term, long-term shortages caused by an aging and growing population need to be addressed. Recommended strategies contained in the AHA report focus on three main areas: redesigning work, retaining existing workers and attracting the new generation of workers.
