But since the very word “cancer” can cause ears and brains to shut down, this 24-page guide from the American Society of Clinical Oncology strikes me as both honest and helpful. “Advanced Cancer Care Planning: What Patients and Families Need to Know About Their Choices When Facing Serious Illness” doesn’t evade the facts; it points out that by definition “advanced cancer” can’t be cured.
