Behind some of the state’s larger metropolitan areas, the San Joaquin Valley has one of the highest rates for costly hospital readmissions, according to a report released today by the Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development.

For hospital patients with at least one readmission — defined as being admitted to the hospital again after previously being discharged within the last year — San Joaquin Valley residents had an average of 1.55 readmissions, behind Los Angeles County at No. 1 with 1.73 followed by Inland Empire/San Diego with 1.61 and the San Francisco Bay Area with 1.59.
