U.S. grants meant to protect health care consumers
San Francisco Chronicle

Federal health officials on Thursday announced a new round of grants totaling nearly $200 million to help states better protect consumers from skyrocketing premium increases.

California, which drew national attention in recent months after Blue Shield of California proposed rate increases that added up to more than 59 percent, is expected to apply for some of the grant money.

The funding builds on $46 million awarded to 45 states, including California, and Washington, D.C., in August.
