UC Irvine Medical Center’s new acute-care hospital today will become UC Irvine Douglas Hospital in commemoration of benefactor M.A. Douglas, whose posthumous $21 million donation allowed the university to reach its fundraising goal for the 19-month-old facility.

Douglas’ estate donated the money after his death in 2008. He earned his wealth as real estate developer whose company, IPS, built and managed more than 10,000 housing units. It was a second career for him, after having worked for B.F. Goodrich for more than 30 years.
