SVMH CEO Retires With High Payout

One of the highest paid public officials in the state is right in your own back yard. Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital CEO Sam Downing is set to retire this week after 40 years.

The state controller John Chaing has been working to make salaries in the public sector more transparent. Recently, he released numbers for public district hospitals and Downing is very close to the top of that list.

But SVMH’s board of directors who negotiated his deal, says Downing deserves what he’s walking away with.
