Sutter fined for heart surgery mishap
Sacramento Business Journal - Kathy Robertson, Staff Writer

California regulators have levied a $25,000 fine against Sutter Health’s Alta Bates/Summit Medical Center in the East Bay because staff left a ring sizer in a patient’s heart during surgery late last year. The California Department of Public Health levied the penalty after determining the hospital failed to follow its own policy of counting all medical supplies used in a procedure to prevent loose parts from being left inside patients.
