Sutter braces for huge hit from Medicare cuts

Sutter Health plans to slash its annual operating budget by about $700 million over the next three years, largely due to greatly reduced Medicare payments from the federal government. Medicare is expected to reduce reimbursement to Sutter Health by $2 billion over the next decade. And Medi-Cal, the state’s health care program for the poor, also may reduce payments to doctors and hospitals, in light of California’s massive debt.
