Surgeon explains high death rate
Modesto Bee

A Modesto doctor was among eight surgeons in California with a higher-than-normal mortality rate for coronary artery bypass surgery, a state survey found. In 2007 and 2008, Dr. John Talieh performed 104 bypass surgeries and eight of the patients died within 30 days of surgery. The 8.62 percent mortality rate, adjusted for risk factors, was almost four times above the norm, says the report released Wednesday by the state Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development.
