The number of health savings accounts and health reimbursement arrangements increased steadily to 5.7 million in 2010, up from 1.2 million in 2006, according to a new study from the not-for-profit Employee Benefit Research Institute. Meanwhile, assets in these accounts also increased to $7.7 billion in 2010, up from $835.4 million in 2006. The findings examined these arrangements and assets, as well as account balances and rollovers over the five-year period from 2006 until 2010.
