State’s Healthy Families program gets funding

The state’s financially troubled Healthy Families insurance program got a much-needed infusion of money Wednesday when federal officials granted the state’s request for $12.5 million to cover 16,500 immigrant children lawfully residing in California. Funding for the program, which provides coverage to 900,000 low-income children, has been in jeopardy because of the state’s budget woes. A $196 million deal in September between the Legislature and governor allowed the program to continue.
