State releases hospital mortality figures for bypass surgery
Contra Costa Times

County Harbor-UCLA Medical Center near Torrance had one of the worst mortality rates in the state for a common heart procedure - a finding hospital officials attribute to reporting errors and the nature of their patient base. State figures released today show that Harbor-UCLA had a 6.57 percent death rate for coronary artery bypass graft surgery, well above the expected death rate of 2.49 percent, and above the state average of 2.35 percent.
