State orders Blue Shield to stop denying coverage for autism

Blue Shield of California Life and Health Insurance Company has been ordered to cease and desist denying insurance coverage for autistic children. The California Department of Insurance issued the order Wednesday, saying Blue Shield had failed to comply with the California Mental Health Parity Act. Enacted in 1999, which requires private insurance plans to provide equal coverage for selected mental health conditions and physical conditions.
