State insurance officials warn of reform’s impact

Leaders of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners said they used a meeting with President Barack Obama on Wednesday to tell him individual health coverage in their states could be disrupted as health plans are required to comply with the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.

Iowa and Maine have sent letters to HHS requesting waivers allowing insurance companies to phase in their compliance with the law’s requirement that at least 80% of premium dollars paid for individual and small-group plans go toward medical care and quality improvement, NAIC leaders told reporters after 35 of the group’s members met with Obama.
