Sacramento’s Shriners hospital, known for its free medical care for children, is going to start billing insurance companies for its services.

The historic change in policy will take effect Tuesday, said hospital spokeswoman Catherine Curran.

It’s a move that’s been in the works for two years. The Shriners Hospitals for Children organization announced in July 2009 that it would need to start billing insurers because of unprecedented financial problems.
