The Mercury News

Santa Cruz County leads the nation in reducing reliance on the emergency room to meet the health needs of people with Medicare. That finding comes out of a study by The Commonwealth Fund, a private foundation that looked at 306 communities nationwide and released its 2012 Scorecard on Local Health System Performance today. The 102-page report evaluates communities on access to health care, prevention and treatment, potentially avoidable hospital use, and healthy lives, drawing on 43 data points drawn from a variety of sources. The newest data were from 2010, the oldest from 1996.
