The Mercury News

A San Diego hospital has announced a $2 billion rebuilding plan that will vastly increase its size and allow it to meet California earthquake safety requirements. Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla unveiled a 25-year master plan Wednesday. The first of three new towers is expected to open in 2015. Two new medical buildings and an outpatient pavilion also are planned. The Scripps Health chain eventually plans to rebuild all five of its hospitals in a region that has fierce competition and a growing need for hospital beds.
