Salinas hospital layoffs debated

A plan to lay off about 90 workers represented by a new union at Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital by the end of the year has been changed. But the new layoff plan is the subject of vigorous debate between hospital and union officials.

On Wednesday, National Union of Healthcare Workers officials said Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital negotiators offered to reduce the number of layoffs to just 20, a much smaller cutback, after a lengthy bargaining session a day earlier.
