Total annual visits to the nation’s emergency departments in a 10-year period increased by about 23% to 116.8 million from 94.9 million, which represents an increase that is nearly double what would be expected from population growth, according to a new study in the Journal of the American Medical Association. From 1997 to 2007, emergency department visit rates rose to 390.5 per 1,000 persons from 352.8 per 1,000 persons, according to the results, which also showed that visits by people between the ages of 18 and 44 and 45 to 64 accounted for the greatest increases.
