Review Blue Shield’s unhealthy rate increases
San Francisco Chronicle

In December 2010, the U.S. inflation rate was reported at 1.5 percent.

The average inflation rate in the United States from the years 1914 to 2010 was about 3.38 percent.

Over the past several years, the costs of health care and education have risen much faster than these averages. But even so, we cannot imagine the reasons for Blue Shield of California to justify a rate increase of up to 59 percent. Especially since this latest increase comes on the heels of three separate rate hikes since fall 2009. Some policy holders are paying more than 90 percent over what they were paying just two years ago.
