Report notes inaction on ‘error prone’ providers

Hospitals, medical equipment suppliers and non-acute-care providers deemed “error prone” by Medicare auditors did not come under review by the CMS or contractors as part of efforts to curb improper payments in recent years, according to a newly released report.

Medicare spent $44.1 billion on improper fee-for-service payments during the four-year period and 740 providers “accounted for a significant portion of the total dollars” paid for errors such as incorrect coding, unnecessary services or documentation errors, the Office of the Inspector General said in its report.
