Report card shows improvements in HMOs, patient satisfaction

Californians are happier with their HMOs than they were a year ago but many of the plans need to do a better job of screening people for some diseases and not over-relying on antibiotics, according to a state assessment on managed care plans. The California Office of the Patient Advocate released its annual report card Tuesday, grading the nine largest HMOs in the state for a litany of care issues ranging from diabetes care to tests for back pain. Six of the HMOs received better marks from their patients than a year ago and the other three held steady.
