Regular checkups could save California billions by preventing hospital stays, agency says

Any doctor can tell you that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Now we know how much that advice was worth: $3.5 billion in preventable hospital bills in California, according to state statisticians.

About one in every 10 hospital admissions in 2008 could have been prevented if patients had made routine visits to a primary care physician, according to data crunched by California’s Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development.
