PVH fined for lapse in patient care

Petaluma Valley Hospital, often honored with awards for outstanding patient care, has been fined $25,000 by the California Department of Public Health for an incident in which a surgical sponge was inadvertently left inside a patient, and has taken steps to help assure that similar incidents don’t occur in the future.

“We are deeply sorry for this incident,” said Jane Read, PVH’s vice president of operations, in a written statement.
