Petaluma Valley Hospital has been fined $25,000 after medical staff left a sponge inside a patient during abdominal surgery in 2008.

The male patient, whose name and age wasn’t revealed, had to have a second surgery 21 months later after the sponge caused a bowel obstruction that sent him to the emergency room. He has recovered, according to the hospital.
