Patients win as doctor ratings are upheld

Last week, the California Medical Association —- a professional group representing 35,000 of the state’s doctors —- lost its bid to shut down a Blue Shield doctors’ rating system that gives “Blue Ribbons” to quality doctors, as the insurer defines them. The decision is an affirmation of the principle of sunshine and its salutary effect; and we hope it will usher in other attempts to provide much-needed transparency to the mysteries of health care quality.
