There is a subtext to today’s release of an AARP report saying the retail prices of popular brand-name drugs rose 8.3 percent last year while inflation dropped.

The drug industry has responded that the consumer price index, which measures cheap generic drugs in addition to brand-name drugs, is a better indicator, and it shows drug prices overall rising just 3.4 percent last year.
