New ACO rules give California players an edge

The new rules governing the accountable care organizations expected to be a key element of national health reform are out, and Bay Area observers say they’re likely to give California and local health systems an edge over many parts of the nation. That’s because big local players, like Kaiser Permanente, Sutter Health, Catholic Healthcare West, Hill Physicians Medical Group, Blue Shield of California and Brown & Toland Physicians, have loads of experience with managed care, integrated care, health care technology, electronic medical records and other key elements that get a leg up under reform. They also have the size to deal with reform’s many complexities.
