Most health care programs fail to get financial reprieve

 Lawmakers have given only one health care program a reprieve from devastating line-item veto budget cuts. A plan to fill a $196 million budget gap in the Healthy Families program — and prevent 600,000 children from losing health care coverage — was approved by the Legislature on Sept. 3 and sent to the governor. He has until midnight Oct. 11 to act on the bill.
