Medi-Cal shouldn’t reimburse bad medicine

Modern-day physicians still strive to abide by the ancient phrase “first, do no harm.” It follows, then, that those who fail to live up to this phrase should be eligible for a more modern one: “Get no pay.”

Shockingly, that’s not the case at the moment. Under Medi-Cal, doctors are paid the same fee for service that leaves patients burned, infected or ridden with bedsores as they are for services that don’t result in those outcomes. AB542 would prohibit payment to doctors whose care results in serious medical error.
