Medi-Cal given the go-ahead to expand

Starting in 2011, the federal government will give California $10 billion to expand its Medi-Cal health care insurance program over five years. This will help the state transition into the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, or the health care reform law, by 2014.

The money comes from the “Bridge to Reform” Section 1115 waiver and will expand Medi-Cal to include more than 500,000 uninsured Californians previously ineligible for the state’s Medicaid program.
