For many, ‘Affordable Care’ means greater expense

Key provisions of the most sweeping federal health care legislation in American history are now in effect and have drawn mixed reactions across the Coachella Valley — from hope to disappointment to just plain confusion. Indio resident Deborah Truax is among those who are disappointed because she expected the Affordable Care Act that President Barack Obama signed March 23 to reduce her costs.

The 61-year-old was diagnosed with Stage 4 cervical cancer in December, just about the time her husband, Mike, was injured on the job and lost his medical coverage.
