Mammogram study raises questions on cost, value of medical technology

Radiologists used a computer-aided method for reading mammograms much more often after Medicare began paying for it, even though its usefulness is disputed, according to a UC Davis doctor’s study.

The findings, published Monday in the Archives of Internal Medicine, illustrate the need for ongoing analysis of new medical technologies, said Dr. Joshua Fenton, the study’s lead author.
