Lawmakers hear of worker injuries caused by lifting patients
Modern Healthcare

Manual lifting and positioning of patients result in thousands of work-related injuries each year, especially as nurses grow older and the population grows heavier, according to testimony given during a Senate subcommittee hearing on safe patient handling and lifting standards.

Healthcare workers regularly lift more weight than truck drivers or construction workers, said Capt. James Collins of the U.S. Public Service, an associate director for science at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health who has participated in research efforts to assess the benefits of mechanical lifts and other tools.
