Lack of health insurance a growing crisis in Valley

The number of Californians without medical insurance has grown dramatically during the recession — particularly in the central San Joaquin Valley, where the figures alarm even seasoned health-care professionals. In three Valley counties — Madera, Merced and Kings — nearly a third of children and non-elderly adults were without health insurance in 2009 — among the highest uninsured rates statewide, according to a recent study.
