Kaiser Permanente named Bernard Tyson as its new president and chief operating officer, the health system announced Friday.

Tyson was promoted from executive vice president.

He had been functioning as the HMO giant’s chief operating officer for the past four years, according to Kaiser’s chairman and chief executive officer, George Halvorson.

“He has been a solid and successful leader,” Halvorson said.
