Kaiser recycles more hospital trash

Christine Collins remembers when hospitals used cloth to package surgical kits instead of blue polypropylene wraps. In the early 1980s, single-use wraps began appearing on operating room shelves at Kaiser, delighting staff, she said.

“We thought: That’s cool. One-time use and it’s safe for patients. But as time has gone by, our conscience has been raised,” she said. “Plastic takes years and years to decompose. We should be capturing this stuff.”
