Joint Commission to offer advanced palliative-care certification

Starting Sept. 1, hospitals accredited by the Joint Commission will have the option of also receiving an advanced certification in palliative care. Standards for the new program will be released July 1, and they will include requirements for a formal, interdisciplinary team with palliative-care expertise; a focus on patient and family engagement; established processes for communication and coordination of care; and the use of evidence-based guidelines, according to a Joint Commission news release.
