Insurance, drugs driving care costs: AHA

U.S. hospitals continue to account for the single-largest healthcare expense, but hospital care is not the fastest-growing cost, according to the American Hospital Association’s latest report on healthcare trends.

The trade group singled out insurance premiums and prescription drugs as expenses that have outpaced hospitals in recent years. As a share of overall health spending, hospitals’ portion fell to roughly one-third from about 43% in 1980, according to the AHA.
