Insurance commissioner post obscure, but winner of race will make big decisions on health reform

The state insurance commissioners’ race might not feature well-known names, but the winner will be tasked with navigating California through the changes brought by federal health care reform. The leading candidates are two state assemblymen who are termed out this year: Democrat Dave Jones of Sacramento and Republican Mike Villines of Clovis. The candidates have wide ideological differences in how they would approach double-digit health insurance rate increases and growing workers’ compensation insurance costs.
