Inspector general urges tighter security for Medicare prescriptions

Additional Medicare security measures are needed to cut the amount of narcotic medications issued by “invalid” prescribers, which totaled more than $20 million worth of controlled drugs in a recent year, according to a report by HHS‘ inspector general’s office (PDF).

The inspector general suggested that insurance plans covering prescription medications under Medicare’s Part D program require clinicians to include their Drug Enforcement Administration prescriber number and reject claims that do not include a valid number.
