Hospitals search high and low to cut expenses in face of health reform
San Francisco Business Times

Bay Area hospitals are finally getting the message: They need to become more efficient, or else. Statewide, hospitals lost $4.8 billion last year on Medi-Cal patients, and they face $17 billion in Medicare cuts over the 10-year period beginning in 2010, according to the California Hospital Association, through budget cuts built into health reform. In San Francisco alone, Medicare is slashing hospital reimbursements more than $11.4 million this year and next, after cutting them $661,000 last year.
