Clamping down on privacy breaches at hospitals statewide, the California Department of Public Health on Thursday fined five hospitals a total of $675,000 for violating state laws protecting confidential medical information.

Two Northern California hospitals – Rideout Memorial in Marysville and Enloe Medical Center in Chico – were among those cited.

Rideout was fined $100,000 by the state in connection with privacy violations involving 33 patients by 17 security guards employed by the hospital.
