San Diego Union-Tribune

Palomar Pomerado Health announced Thursday that it will test a newly approved ultraviolet light disinfection machine at its Escondido hospital and Poway convalescent center, in a search for a new way to combat hospital-acquired infections.

Hospital-associated infections account for 1.7 million illnesses and 99,000 deaths each year, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, making them one of the most serious issues facing health care facilities and their patients.
