Hospital readmissions cost $227 million per day, $13 million in Sacramento region

Reducing avoidable hospital readmissions in California — cases when a person is sent home from the hospital or nursing home too soon and without needed support — by just one day could save government health care programs $227 million a year, a new report shows. Applied locally, reducing unnecessary hospital readmissions by just one day would save more than $13 million annually in the four-county Sacramento region.
