Hospital finds companionship for patients in final hours

Dying alone is a common fear, according to Redlands Community Hospital chaplain Paul Reed. This week, the hospital will begin training volunteers to ensure that patients do not die alone.

In May, the hospital plans to launch No One Dies Alone, a program that provides companionship to dying people with no family or friends present. The concept was started 10 years ago by Sandra Clarke, a nurse at Sacred Heart Medical Center in Eugene, Ore.
