HHS inspector general: Adjust CMS skilled nursing pay

The HHS inspector general called for the “immediate” correction of billing changes CMS implemented last year that have resulted in an unintended $2.1 billion increase in payments to skilled nursing facilities, as identified in a report issued Monday. The CMS payment changes were supposed to produce no increases in spending. The CMS payment changes for skilled nursing facilities—effective at the beginning of fiscal year 2011—aimed to decrease billing for costliest types of therapy by restricting eligibility for them while also sharply increasing payments for that therapy.
