Health costs still grow

Through the years, private- and public-sector employees have paid ever-increasing amounts for health-care benefits. So have employers who generally, reluctantly or not, march to the financial tunes played by the nation’s large health-care insurers. And amid political rancor in Sacramento, where Gov. Jerry Brown has said that even a multibillion-dollar bounce in tax revenues will not close the state’s gaping budget deficit, as lawmakers haggle over a “no-cuts” budget or tax extensions, comes news of still more increases in health-care benefits for county, city and school district employees. Ultimately, the taxpayer picks up the tab.
